Amniocentesis

Amniocentesis (“amnio”) is an invasive procedure. Amniocentesis used in prenatal diagnosis of chromosomal abnormalities and neural tube defects, also for sex determination.

During procedure small amount of amniotic fluid containing fetal cells is taken, it is sampled and fetal DNA is examined for genetic abnormalities.

The most common reason to have an “amnio” is to be sure, that the baby has no certain genetic disorders or chromosomal abnormalities, such as Dawn syndrome, Patau syndrome, Edwards syndrome etc.
